Abstract

Abstract

Drawing on administrative, notarial, ecclesiastical and cadastral sources relating to Crotone between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, the essay reconstructs the role of medicine, farriery and apothecary shops within the city’s economic and institutional organisation. The «cedole de exito» of the Regia fabbrica document the therapeutic interventions carried out on the fortification works commissioned by Charles V against the Ottoman threat, read in light of the political-military context that generated them and of the still-developing regulatory framework governing the health professions in the Kingdom of Naples. The notarial and diocesan documentation reconstructs the presence of apothecary shops within the urban space, their economic role, and their relations with ecclesiastical institutions and aristocratic families, across a chronological span that also crosses the protomedical Prammatiche of 1581 and 1679. The essay thus proposes an integrated reading of Crotone’s urban health system, and of its long-term transformations, as a component of the city’s economic, institutional and social organisation in the early modern period.
