Article Processing Charge (APC)
Nuova Rivista Storica (NRS) applies an Article Processing Charge (APC) to manuscripts accepted for publication under the Open Access model. From 1 June 2026 onward, all newly submitted manuscripts will be subject to an APC upon acceptance.
The APC is set at USD 1000 per article. It supports the costs associated with maintaining the journal’s scholarly publishing standards, including rigorous peer review, professional copyediting, typesetting, digital production, long-term archiving, and editorial management. It also contributes to ensuring the accessibility, discoverability, and long-term preservation of published research.
The APC is a one‑time fee that covers the editorial and production costs associated with peer‑review management, professional article preparation, and the dissemination of published work across multiple platforms. There are no submission fees, no charges for rejected manuscripts, and no surcharges based on article length, number of figures, or supplementary materials.
General Information on APC at Nuova Rivista Storica
From the first issue of 2027, NRS will publish all content in open access, ensuring maximum visibility, academic reuse, and international dissemination of articles, with full recognition of authors’ contributions. All open access publications are licensed under the Creative Commons (CC BY) license.
Editorial Workflow and Systems
NRS maintains and develops its own electronic submission and peer‑review system, along with additional tools that support the scholarly community. These resources ensure an efficient, transparent, and traceable editorial workflow.
Publication and Production
- Initial triage: The editorial team and members of the Editorial Board conduct an initial assessment to ensure thematic and methodological suitability.
- Peer‑review management: The editorial office assists Academic Editors by inviting reviewers, coordinating reports, communicating with authors and reviewers, and managing revisions.
- Professional production: This includes copy‑editing, typesetting, XML and PDF conversion, and minor language editing.
- Proofreading: Authors review and approve the final version of their article.
- Editorial support: Assistance is provided before submission, throughout peer review, and after publication.
- Journal management and development: Managing Editors monitor key performance indicators, analyze trends in the field of History, and coordinate with the Editor‑in‑Chief and the Editorial Board.
- Indexing and archiving: Continuous work is carried out to expand the journal’s presence in major academic databases and ranking systems.
- Digital preservation: All journals published by Tech Science Press are archived in Portico, which provides permanent digital archiving for scholarly journals.
Communication and Visibility
A portion of APC income supports the promotion of the journal and its articles through:
- Sponsorship of conferences and scholarly events
- Awards and recognitions for researchers
- Academic communication and international visibility initiatives
General Management
APC also contribute to:
- Administrative and non‑editorial staff costs
- Membership fees for professional publishing organizations
- Additional publication and preservation services
- Taxes and legal obligations
- Institutional activities aligned with the publisher’s academic mission
Institutional Open Access Collaboration
NRS welcomes interest from universities, research institutions, and consortia that wish to support Open Access publishing for their affiliated authors.
We are open to exploring institutional arrangements that may facilitate APC payments and support Open Access publication for researchers. Institutions interested in potential collaboration are invited to contact the Editorial Office to discuss possible models and cooperation frameworks.
Discounts and Waivers
NRS is committed to supporting open access in the Humanities, particularly in fields with limited funding. Therefore:
- Waivers or discounts may be offered depending on funding availability, manuscript quality, and authors’ institutional circumstances.
- Humanities journals often apply substantial fee reductions, and NRS is committed to maintaining such practices to support inclusivity and geographic diversity.
- Authors from low‑ and middle‑income countries may request waivers on a case‑by‑case basis.
Tech Science Press remains rights to offer discount vouchers to selected reviewers. Waivers may be granted at the Publisher’s discretion and should be discussed with the editorial office when submitting the article.
All authors should consider in advance whether they have sufficient funds to cover the full APC.
