Abstract
Il saggio esplora le apparizioni notturne in Puglia, analizzando fonti ecclesiastiche, lettere, editti trattati demonologici, opere letterarie e processi per magia e stregoneria. L’obiettivo è quello di mostrare come tali rappresentazioni fossero il risultato di una cultura sotterranea comune e diffusa in diverse aree, suggerendo, per la Puglia, l’esistenza di una cultura regionale più o meno condivisa. Inoltre, le visioni notturne, in bilico tra sogno e realtà, riflettono un ricco panorama di interazioni con santi, demoni ed esseri magici. Queste manifestazioni, spesso associate a malattie, riflettono le paure e le speranze delle società e offrono uno spunto di riflessione molto interessante. La dimensione onirica emerge come strumento di interpretazione di esperienze ambigue, mettendo in luce il complesso rapporto tra religiosità e sofferenza e mostrando come le credenze abbiano influenzato la percezione del mondo.
This study analyses the perceptions and discourses surrounding nocturnal apparitions, taking into account various types of sources, including legal documents, synods, pastoral visits, edicts, letters, chronicles, literary works and demonological treatises. The aim is to show how such representations were the result of a common and widespread underground culture, manifested in similar testimonies in different areas of Puglia. This homogeneity suggests the existence of a more or less shared regional culture of magic and witchcraft. The nocturnal apparitions, interwoven between dream and reality, reflect a rich panorama of interactions with saints, demons and magical beings. These manifestations, often associated with illness, reveal the fears and hopes of societies and open up a very interesting framework. The dreamlike dimension emerges as a means of interpreting ambiguous experiences, highlighting the complex relationship between religiosity and suffering, and illustrating how beliefs influenced the perception of the world.
