Nuova Rivista Storica is a peer-reviewed scientific journal inspired by the publication ethics code drawn up by the Committee on Publication Ethics COPE, whose guidelines are shared by the Editor, Editorial Board, authors and referees.

Duties of the Editors and the Editorial Board

Non-Discrimination

The Editors and the Editorial Board evaluate submitted manuscripts solely on the basis of their scholarly content, without discrimination on the grounds of the authors’ gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, nationality, or political affiliation.

Ethical Oversight of Research Practices

The Editors and the Editorial Board commit to implementing and enforcing NRS’s policy on the ethical conduct of research. This encompasses the promotion of the principles of solidarity, equality, the advancement of culture, and the freedom of intellectual inquiry.

Confidentiality

The Editors and the Editorial Board pledge not to disclose any information about submitted manuscripts to individuals other than the author, the reviewers, and the publisher.

Conflict of Interest and Disclosure

The Editors and the Editorial Board undertake not to appropriate any content from a submitted manuscript for their own research without the author’s written permission. In collaboration with the legal counsel of Società Editrice Dante Alighieri, they also agree to manage any conflicts of interest—identified before or after publication—in accordance with applicable laws, and to follow established procedures for their resolution, involving all potentially affected parties (authors, reviewers, editors, journals and publishers, and the wider scholarly community).

Publication Decisions

Decisions to accept or reject manuscripts rest with the Journal’s Editors and the Editorial Board. These decisions are based exclusively on the outcomes of the peer-review process (double-blind peer-review process for all articles; single-blind peer review process only for submissions to the Interpretations & Reviews and Forum sections), conducted by external reviewers. Furthermore, with support from the publisher’s legal counsel, the Editors and the Editorial Board ensure compliance with the regulations issued by the National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research System (ANVUR)—notably the “Regulations for the Classification of Journals in Non-Bibliometric Areas” adopted by ANVUR’s Governing Council on 21 December 2023 and published on 9 January 2024—managing any conflicts of interest or disputes that may arise during peer review and in communicating review outcomes to authors.

Transparency of the Peer-Review Process

The Editors and the Editorial Board commit to publishing their peer-review criteria and, every two years, to disclose the names of all reviewers on the journal and its website.

Duties of the Reviewers

Contribution to Editorial Decision

Peer review is a binding procedure that assists the Editors and the Editorial Board in making decisions about submitted manuscripts. Far from being merely a positive-or-negative judgment, its primary purpose is to help the author improve their work (the pedagogical value of peer review).

Respect for Deadlines

A reviewer who feels unqualified for the assignment or who knows they cannot complete the review within the requested timeframe must promptly inform the coordinators.

Confidentiality

Every manuscript assigned for review must be treated as confidential; reviewers must not discuss its contents with anyone without the explicit permission of the editors.

Objectivity

Peer review must be conducted impartially; personal judgments about the author are to be excluded. Reviewers are required to provide well-substantiated reasons for their evaluations.

Reference Recommendations

Reviewers commit to accurately identifying any key bibliographic works the author may have overlooked. They must also alert the editors to any similarities or overlaps between the manuscript under review and other works known to them.

Conflict of Interest and Disclosure

All information obtained during peer review is confidential and may not be used for any purpose other than the review itself. Reviewers must decline to review any manuscript if, in the course of accepting the assignment, they become aware—directly or indirectly—of the author’s identity and recognize a conflict of interest.

Duties of the Authors

Originality and Plagiarism

Authors must affirm that their work is entirely original. In this regard, the Editors and the Editorial Board are obliged to implement procedures for detecting and addressing breaches of scientific integrity (e.g., plagiarism, reproducing previously published material without quotation marks and/or proper citation, or data falsification), including following up on any external reports brought to the journal’s or publisher’s attention.

Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Submissions

Authors must not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal simultaneously.

Citation of Sources

Authors must always provide accurate citations for all sources and contributions referenced in their article.

Authorship and Credit

Proper credit must be given to all individuals who made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the research underlying the article. If other individuals contributed substantially to certain phases of the research, their contributions must be explicitly acknowledged.

Conflict of Interest and Disclosure

Authors must avoid any conflicts of interest that could have influenced their results or interpretations. They must also disclose any funding sources or financial support related to the research or project from which the article arose.

Copyright Compliance

Authors agree to obtain all necessary permissions and releases for the publication of text (beyond fair quotation), data, images, and figures included in their submissions, in accordance with current copyright law, customary disciplinary standards, and any confidentiality requirements as established by Article 15 of the Italian Constitution.

Duties of the Publisher and Authors’ Rights

Intellectual Property Policies (Copyright and Publication Licenses)

The Publisher grants authors full freedom to republish their contributions previously published in NRS in scholarly volumes and miscellanies, as well as to include them in databases recognized by the international research community, provided that they clearly cite the original venue and exact publication date.

Likewise, with respect to intellectual property policies (including copyright management and publication licenses), the Publisher ensures that all permissions and releases required for publication and access—whether open access or not—of text (beyond fair quotation), data, images, and figures are secured in compliance with applicable copyright law, customary disciplinary standards, and any confidentiality obligations under Article 15 of the Italian Constitution.

Duties of the Publisher and Rights of the Editors and Editorial Board

Because NRS is not bound by the national contract for journalists and publicists, the Publisher may appoint scholars to the Editorial Board at its discretion—but only after consulting and obtaining the consent of the Editors and the Editorial Board.
