Abstract
Scritto in occasione del 250° anniversario del famoso Trattato di Küçük Kaynarca del 1774, questo articolo analizza le origini e lo sfruttamento di due miti concomitanti basati su questo trattato, così come la loro demistificazione: il riconoscimento della Russia come protettrice dei sudditi ortodossi dell’Impero Ottomano e il riconoscimento, o addirittura la creazione ex nihilo, di un Califfato ottomano universale ed extraterritoriale. Lo studio della successione dei testi e degli eventi che hanno contribuito alla creazione di questi miti rivela la manipolazione permanente di questo trattato, che peraltro non cesserà con il processo di demistificazione. Gli attori della partita attorno al Trattato di Küçük Kaynarca, che merita il suo posto tra i trattati «leggendari» della storia diplomatica, sembrano condividere un punto comune, ovvero quello di non aver consultato il testo del trattato.
Written on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the famous 1774 Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, this article analyses the origins and exploitation of two concomitant myths based on this treaty, as well as their demystification: the recognition of Russia as protector of the Orthodox subjects of the Ottoman Empire and the recognition, or even the creation ex nihilo, of a universal and extraterritorial Ottoman Caliphate. The study of the succession of texts and events that contributed to the creation of these myths reveals the permanent manipulation of this treaty, which will continue with the demystification process. The players in the game concerning the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, which deserves its place among the «legendary» treaties of diplomatic history, seem to share a common point, namely that of not having consulted the text of the treaty.
